Congratulations! You're starting out in your first teaching role and you’re preparing for your first class. You will always remember these early days as a beginning teacher.

This is an exciting time in your teaching career and we understand it may also be a little daunting. You’ll be building relationships with your students and their parents and carers, as well as your colleagues and the school community.

Before you start

We’ve created a useful website to help with your beginning teacher induction. You’ll find all the information you’ll need to get started in your teaching career, including some orientation checklists to guide you on what to do before you start, on your first day and week, as well as procedures for your school and relocation.

Teacher Learning Centres

Our Teacher Learning Centres (TLCs) have been established as part of an exciting initiative to enhance support for preservice, beginning and early career teachers during their teaching journey. The TLCs are located in every Queensland region and provide streamlined on-the-ground support for you by helping you navigate the department’s wide range of professional learning programs and development opportunities.

Beginning teacher regional induction

Each year, our education regions host beginning teacher induction events. These events are a great way for you to meet other beginning teachers and obtain information and resources to support your transition into teaching. Once you're employed with us, we encourage you to talk to your school principal and/or contact your region HR beginning teacher representative to learn more about the induction conference for your region. Alternatively, you can direct your enquiry to the Learning and Professional Development team at LearningandPD.HUMANRES@qed.qld.gov.au

Teacher networking events

One of the most valuable things you can do throughout your career is to build your networks. While you settle into your new school, local networking events are a great way to meet other beginning teachers and build more connections to complement school induction programs.

Professional learning and support

As a beginning teacher, you’ll have access to a range of additional programs that will provide you with valuable professional learning and well-being support to help you as a beginning teacher. The format of these programs can vary so your Principal will be able to advise you on what is available in your area.

Beginning teacher learning suite

The department’s Beginning teacher learning suite is designed to help preservice, beginning and early career teachers:

  • navigate the first years of their teaching journey
  • develop their capability, confidence and classroom readiness
  • start collecting the evidence they need to move to full registration with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT).

Kickstart your career with engaging online content and resources related to: Classroom management, Wellbeing, Building relationships, Inclusive education, Curriculum delivery, Performance and development, and OneSchool.

For more information, including how to register, email LearningandPD.HUMANRES@qed.qld.gov.au.
