Pathways

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who aspire to become teachers can explore pathways and programs to reach their goal of becoming a leader in the classroom and role model in your community.

Remote Area Teacher Education Program (RATEP)

Study teaching without leaving your community!

The Remote Area Teacher Education Program (RATEP) offers locally-based teacher education programs to help you remain in your own community while you study. We can help you in your desire to inspire others in your community as a teacher-in-training.

RATEP provides suitable teacher aides and other school employees the opportunity to study part-time for their Certificate IV and Diploma of Education (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) through TAFE Queensland North.

These nationally accredited teacher-in-training qualifications provide a direct pathway for you to become a registered teacher in Queensland. Completion of the Diploma will also give you a full year of credit towards a Bachelor of Education at James Cook University.

Find out when enrolments are open on the TAFE Queensland website.

Financial and professional assistance

We’re here to support you as you begin your teaching career. There are a range of scholarships available to all aspiring teachers, and specific opportunities for preservice Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers, including our Pearl Duncan Teaching Scholarship.
