​​​​​If you’re thinking about studying teaching or are a current preservice teacher, you might be wondering what job opportunities will be available at the end of your course.

While there are fewer permanent opportunities in South East Queensland schools (Brisbane Metropolitan, the Sunshine and Gold Coasts, and Toowoomba), there are many high priority locations and teaching areas throughout the state that always need passionate and enthusiastic educators.

​​​Teach a high priority discipline

There are a range of teaching areas that are currently in demand, and will continue to be in the coming years. If you’re beginning your teaching career in our state schools, or you’re looking to shift gears from industry to teaching, you might consider these priority teaching areas as part of your qualification. We need teachers in primary and secondary school settings, as well as Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) teachers.

STEM subjects

STEM teachers in Queensland state schools are a high priority, with teachers needed for subjects such as:

  • science (biology, chemistry, physics)
  • technology (industrial design and technology, including manual arts)
  • engineering (including robotics)
  • mathematics (general, specialist, and mathematical methods).

Industrial Technology and Design teachers

Assorted toolsDo you have an interest or passion for teaching Building and Construction Skills, Engineering, Furnishing, Industrial Graphics, Industrial Technology Skills, Technology Studies or Manual Arts? 

You will deliver the Australian Curriculum or Vocational Education and Training/Applied Senior Syllabus program and engage students in the design process to enable them to create solutions by using technologies processes and production. We will support you to build on your knowledge and teaching experience to deliver the Australian Curriculum, applied senior syllabus or vocational education programs.

Japanese teachers

As a Japanese teacher, you will support students to build their ability to communicate in writing and orally in the Japanese language and understand the relationship between language, culture and their learning. We will support you to build on your knowledge and teaching experienced to deliver the Australian Curriculum, through a range of programs, including the global schools through languages hub.

Teach in a rural community

If you’d like a unique and life-changing way to start your teaching career, working in a regional, rural or remote community could be perfect for you. State schools in these locations are more likely to have jobs available and offer a range of lifestyle opportunities you may not get to experience in the city.

With over half of Queensland's state schools in rural and remote communities, widening your employment location preferences may increase your chances of gaining a teaching position. Most permanent teaching vacancies each year are in the Darling Downs South West, Central Queensland, North Queensland and Far North Queensland regions.
